Non-Profit Spotlight: Historical Tree Society

Celebrate the birth of our nation this year by planting a tree from the non-profit American Forests Historic Tree Nursery. Established in 1875, this Florida based organization is dedicated to planting trees for environmental restoration. They have developed a unique program that propagates offspring from hundreds of previously identified trees of historical significance. All proceeds from the sale of the trees goes to continuing their work in establishing conservation programs to preserve trees across America.

Featured in a 13 episode 2002 PBS series, and featured in several publications, this organization provides a much needed service while helping the public to preserve our local and national heritage. Consider purchasing a tree from their website for your backyard, in memory of a loved one, create a family “heritage” grove, as a birthday or wedding gift or to teach a child about history.

For example, in honor of the 4th of July, how about planting an Abraham Lincoln White Oak found in their “Liberty” section. This White Oak originated in Illinois, grows in zones 4-8 and can be yours for $44.50 plus shipping. Or consider a Betsy Ross Sycamore located in the “presidents” section. Originating in Pennsylvania, this Sycamore thrives in zones 4-10 and is $39.50. The website has hundreds of trees to choose from and the prices are quite reasonable.

The American Forests’ Historic Tree Nursery has grown thousands of small trees from seeds or cuttings – and all from trees that have historical significance. These are trees that have withstood the test of time; present during wars such as the American Revolution and the Civil war, major advancements in technology and civil liberties, and outstanding statesmanship.

Do you know of a tree in your community that deserves to be recognized? Has it been witness to battles, peace treaties or a scientific achievement? The National Register of Historic Trees is conducting a nationwide search to identify and register historic trees. Nominations are being accepted from citizens, communities, and public officials. Log on to their website for information on how to nominate a tree or to purchase one for your backyard.
